Naming History

Neon was named by William Ramsay from the Greek word neos which means new.

Discovery

Neon was first isolated by William Ramsay and Morris Travers in 1898. By this point two Noble gases (Argon and Krypton) had been discovered and Ramsay and Travers hypothesized that there should be a lighter Noble gas that would fit a whole on the periodic table. To isolate Neon, the two scientists allowed solid Argon surrounded by liquid air to exaporate slowly under reduced pressure. The first gas that came off was collected and determined to be the new element they were seraching for using atomic spectroscopy.

Characteristics

Neon is a the fifth most common element in the universe and was originally formed from the fusing of Helium and Oxygen. Neon is also a Noble gas which makes it one of the most unreactive elements that exists.

  • Neon has no biological role due to its inability to react with anything.

  • The Earths crust is around 70 parts per trillion (ppt) Neon, making it the 82nd most abundant elelement in the crust,

  • Neon is present int he atmosphere where it comprises around 18 parts per million (ppm).

Naturally Occurring Minerals

Due to the unreactive nature of Neon there are no real minearls that contain Neon. Neon can be extracted from air by distilling liquid air and absorbing over activated charcoal.

  • One of the main uses of Neon is to produce vibrant colors in Neon lights.
